Recognizing an employee's efforts goes a long way toward lifting employee morale, according to the University of Washington's human resources department. A simple email commending a staff member for his efforts or a letter of thanks can help an employee realize that he is appreciated and that his work is valued. Alternatively, have an employee awards ceremony at the end of the year. The awards give an institution an opportunity to recognize employee efforts publicly, which encourages employees to keep up their good work.
Although raises are appreciated, in tough economic times, school districts can't always pay what the staff deserves. Small tokens of appreciation are less expensive than raises but they still provide tangible evidence that the staff member is appreciated. Give the employee a gift certificate to an area restaurant or to a store. Even a small gift can lift morale, such as a fruit basket, a selection of gourmet coffees or a box of cookies from a bakery.
Plan a school fun day, such as a day of discovery about dinosaurs or a luau day. This provides a break from the routine for both the staff and the students. Elementary and high school students alike enjoy dressing up and having special events, and because the students are excited, they are more engaged with the subject matter. Plan a staff potluck or luncheon to give them a special treat as well as a break from the students.
One of the best ways to recognize staff is to give them a break. While you may not be able to give staff a day off, you can excuse them from a task or give them some flex time to use as they see fit. For example, excuse a staff member from a planning session or a meeting where her attendance is not strictly necessary. Let her know that you are doing this to give her a well-deserved break.
