Who were most often the teachers in freedmens bureau schools?

The teachers in Freedmen's Bureau schools were most often white women from the North. While some Black teachers were employed, they were a minority, especially in the early years. The shortage of qualified Black teachers and the prevalent racism of the time limited their opportunities. Many Northern white women, often motivated by religious or abolitionist convictions, volunteered to teach in these schools.
