Who were most often the teachers in freedmens bureau schools?

The teachers in Freedmen's Bureau schools were most often young, white women from the North. While some Black teachers eventually emerged, especially as the system developed, the initial and largest contingent of instructors were Northern white women. Many were motivated by religious or abolitionist beliefs and a desire to aid in Reconstruction.
