How to Incorporate Cohorts in the SES

Supplemental Educational Services are additional academic services which are provided to increase academic achievement of students in schools. These services go along with the instruction that students are given throughout a normal school day and include a range of extra tutoring and other services that are consistent with the content of the local educational agency. SES services are expected to be of a consistently good quality and incorporating cohorts has to be done according to a particular standard set by the state.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the number of students in each cohort. One-to-one tutoring is ideal, since it will ensure maximum attention to each student. If this is difficult, keep in mind that a three to one student-instructor ratio is the most common and also effective. Try not to go beyond eight students for every tutor.

    • 2

Offer cohorts the appropriate facilities to provide effective academic services. Spaces should include all necessary equipment, be kept at a reasonable temperature and free from noise and distractions. Opt for the school classroom as an ideal place, since it most often meets the criteria. Offer online tutoring opportunities for students living far away from your facilities.

    • 3

Shape cohorts based on the different student populations. Low-income students, migrant students, English language learners, special education students or minority students should form cohorts that get specialized services, to help them more efficiently. Consider different grade levels when forming cohorts in the SES, since different age students acquire knowledge differently.

    • 4

Consider accessibility. Make sure that your SES facilities are within a walking distance from the students' schools and houses. If this is not possible, then offering transportation may be helpful, especially in the case that your services are provided in rural areas, not accessible by public transportation.
