Cornfield Diorama Ideas

Corn is American farming. According the USDA, corn crops accounts for more the 90 percent of the feed grown in the United States, with about 80 million acres of land dedicated to growing it. This important crop is an ideal topic for classroom learning. Use cornfield dioramas to educate children about farms, nutrition, alternative fuels and the autumn season.
  1. Farms

    • Have students create dioramas with cornfields to represent a highly important crop during a lesson on American farming. Direct students to make large cornfields on top of cardboard. They can form these crops with green and yellow Play-Doh or you can purchase model cornstalks from model stores. Let them add a silo for holding grain and a red farmhouse to the cornfields. Have them include a tractor and a few farm animals, such as a cow, horse and chicken.

    Nutrition

    • Educate students about nutrition with a cornfield diorama. Let students create a cornfield and a dinner table with the four food groups: dairy, fruits and vegetables, grains and meats. Corn is a high fiber grain, and students can use the cornfield to represent the grains in a nutritious eating plan. Introduce students to organizations such as Farm to Table and the Farm-Based Education Association and have them research local agriculture and the importance of healthy eating.

    Alternative Fuels

    • A diorama with a cornfield and an automobile engine serves as a project about alternative and renewable fuels. Corn can be made into ethanol, which is combined with 15 percent gasoline to run flexible fuel cars. Ethanol with 90 percent gasoline can be used in all American cars. Teach students about engines and alternative fuels and have them create dioramas with engines, ethanol molecules and cornfields. Ask students to add a model Earth to represent a cleaner environment with renewable fuels.

    Autumn

    • A cornfield diorama is ideal for learning about autumn, as corn is typically harvested in the autumn. Use a cornfield diorama to represent Halloween, Thanksgiving and any type of harvest festival. For a Halloween diorama, add a night sky, a large moon and a jack-o-lantern to a cornfield. A Thanksgiving diorama benefits from cornfields, figurines of Native Americans and pilgrims, and a large meal. A general autumn harvest diorama includes cornfields, ripe apples and haystacks. Include trees with golden leaves as well.
