How to Find the Mean Proportion Between 2 Numbers

The mean proportion of any two given positive numbers is also termed the geometric mean. Unlike the more common arithmetic mean, or the "average" in which you add a set of numbers and divide by the number of numbers, the proportional mean between two numbers is determined by the square root of their product.

Instructions

    • 1

Identify the two numbers for which you wish to find their mean proportion. For example, consider 23 and 44.

    • 2

Get the product of the two numbers by multiplying them. For this example, the product of 23 and 44 is 1,012.

    • 3

Find the square root of the product of the two numbers to determine their mean proportion. For this example, use a scientific calculator to find that the square root of 1,012 is 31.81.
