Gather all of the sight words that you are teaching the students and put them into a story. You might want to search for a Dolce sight word story or create your own, if you are using your own set of words. Have the students go through the story and highlight or underline the sight words that they notice. You could ask more advanced students to create their own stories using all of the sight words.
Have students practice manipulating the words and figuring out their meanings. Assign a crossword puzzle where all of the answers are sight words. Another more simple option is to assign a word search with all or some of the sight words. You may want to provide a list of some sight words that have been scrambled. Unscrambling them will allow students to practice their spelling skills in the process.
Teach students how some of the words on the sight list are related to one another. Select three words that belong in the same category and one that does not. For example, you might write teacher, doctor, nurse and pigeon on the board. Ask students which word does not belong. Have them explain why the word does not belong in the group, as well as how the other three words are connected to one another.
If you do not already have flashcards for all of your sight words, create them. Have one student come up to the board and read all of the words as quickly as possible. He must pronounce them correctly for them to count. Time him as he reads. Once he is finished, write his name and time on the board. Mix the order of the cards up, and challenge other students to try to beat the time.
