The Cognitive Objectives of a Vocabulary Lesson

Cognition is the way in which information is processed in the brain. Several aspects of vocabulary become a part of the cognitive learning process during vocabulary lessons. People retain information in different ways, so using all the cognitive objectives in a vocabulary lesson will help to ensure they learn and retain new words.
  1. Meaning

    • Teach the meaning of a word so the student can use that word in a writing or speaking context. A student should be able to speak the definition of the word once he hears it, and he should be able to identify a word from hearing its definition.

    Spelling

    • Include the spelling of vocabulary words when you teach the words. Words are often derived from origins such as Latin, and knowing how to spell words can often help identify their meanings. Have students practice spelling the words in writing and in speaking.

    Pronunciation

    • Incorporate the pronunciation of words into vocabulary lessons. Students should hear and say the words out loud, and even break them down into syllables to see the emphasis that is placed on the different sections of each word.

    Visual Recognition

    • Visual recognition of words can help students learn their definitions and spellings in a vocabulary lesson. Students should write out the words when they are learning them so they can recognize them in a written context, and so they can become familiar with the correct spelling and diction placement for each word.
