How to Teach Math Through PE Courses

Math can be a tricky subject to teach, as children often become bored with the worksheets and drills that are commonly used to teach it. In order to provide students with a break from the monotony of math drills and worksheets, consider teaching the subject in a physical education class. The activities that can be used to teach math in PE offer children a more engaging and interactive means of learning match skills.

Instructions

  1. Addition Bowling

    • 1

Clean and remove the labels from 10 empty 2-liter soda bottles. Fill the bottom of the bottles with sand and arrange the bottles on the ground in a bowling pin formation.

    • 2

Place a piece of masking tape on the ground 4-feet away from the bowling pins. This line will serve as the point where students will stand while bowling.

    • 3

Provide students with a rubber ball. Instruct one student at a time to stand on the masking tape and roll the ball toward the pins. After knocking down the pins, instruct them to record the total number of pins that have been knocked down. Allow students to take two turns to try to knock down all the pins.

    • 4

Allow students to bowl a total of 10 times. After bowling, instruct students to add together their scores. The student who earns the most points wins the game.

    Ball Catch Math

    • 5

Blow up a beach ball and use a marker to write several numbers on the beach ball. Cover the surface of the ball with numbers.

    • 6

Divide the class into two teams. Have the teams stand on opposite sides of the gym facing one another.

    • 7

Throw the ball to one team and shout out an operation; addition, subtraction, multiplication or division. The person who catches the ball must apply the operation to the numbers underneath her hands. For example, if you shout out subtraction and the person who catches the ball has his hands land on four and two, she would subtract the two numbers.

    • 8

Award a point to teams when a math question is correctly solved. Have the teams throw the ball back and forth to one another for an allotted period of time. The team which earns the most points at the end of the game wins.
