How to Identify the Set as Finite or Infinite

If you have a data set, it is either finite or infinite. A finite data set has a beginning and an end. With a finite set you can list every single possible number in the set. However, if you have an infinite set, it is impossible to list every number in the set because there is an infinite amount of numbers possible. This is used in very basic math to limit the possible number of answers to an equation.

Instructions

    • 1

      Write out your data set.

    • 2

Check to see if at any point in the beginning of the data set you can stop writing numbers because you covered each number. This is a finite set. For example, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 is a finite set.

    • 3

Check to see if you aren't able to stop writing numbers for a set. This is an infinite set. For example, x ... > 3. Since any number greater than three can be used to satisfy this expression, there is an infinite amount of possible numbers to satisfy it.
