Online Scavenger Hunt Ideas

A scavenger hunt is a game in which a list of items must be found by either an individual or a team. Traditionally, the game is played at parties but can easily be played in a classroom setting online for educational purposes. A scavenger hunt can be used to teach new concepts, review for a test or to just strengthen knowledge of a particular subject.
  1. Themes

    • Choose a theme for the scavenger hunt such as dinosaurs, rainforests or Greek culture and create a list of items or questions that fall into the category. For example, a list of rainforest-themed items could include the average rainfall, temperatures and locations of tropical rainforests. Refrain from questions that would result in a true or false answer. As an alternative to questions, provide pictures and have the participants find the name of the items. There are also online sites such as the Knowledge Network Explorer provided by AT&T that help establish questions based on a topic.

    Participants

    • Divide the players into groups or have them compete individually. A computer lab will be required for numerous players. When playing as individuals without enough computers, players will have to take turns on the computers or more than one computer lab can be used.

    Computer Usage

    • Website history data should be deleted before the next person takes a turn on the computer to help eliminate cheating. Alternatively, provide participants with certain websites they must use rather than letting them search the entire Internet.

    Computer Lab Alternative

    • An online scavenger hunt can take place in the field while allowing players to submit answers via a website, email or social media site. Players can either submit written answers or pictures of themselves with items on the scavenger list.

    Time

    • Establish a time limit in which the players must either find all of the items or have found the most items. A prize can be established for the individual or group that scores the highest. If possible, set up the computers for maximum efficiency prior to the scavenger hunt. Run a de-fragment process on computers if using a lab, or have a computer technician complete one if you are not familiar with doing so. This will help create the most efficient environment for the time restraint.
