Tips on Persuasive Speech Writing

Are you passionate about a topic and need to persuade others to join your cause? Consider giving a persuasive speech about the topic. A persuasive speech mixes information with motivation and inspiration to convince the audience that change is needed and they are capable of making it happen. Politicians, non-profit CEOs and sales people often give persuasive speeches.
  1. Emotional

    • Try to find a way to engage the emotions of your audience. Persuasive speeches that move people towards action identify a fear or aspiration of people in the audience. When you engage the audience's emotions, they become active listeners. They become more likely to accept what you are saying and be moved to act upon the information.

    Examples

    • People relate more readily to examples of information rather than just facts and figures. For example, if you are giving a speech about the high school drop out rate in America, simply sharing an astonishingly high percentage may garner attention but not necessarily move people to action. When you give that number a name and a face, such as sharing the story of a high school drop out, suddenly people are moved to care for someone else.

    Be Clear

    • It is easy to allow your emotions to take over when you are passionate about a topic. Plan for that in your speech. Organize your essay into clear, well-supported points. Restate important information several times. Use strong verbs and active sentence. Be sure that you are using language that is clear to your audience. Do not use words that your audience will not know their meaning.

    Call to Action

    • As you conclude your speech, be sure to summarize your points and leave your audience with a call to action. A call to action is a clear sentence or two telling them exactly what you want them to do with the information. The call to action may be to buy now, write a letter to their representative or act a different way.
