K2 Cognitive Assessment Activities

Assessing cognitive skills in children between kindergarten and the second grade is important. It measures their past and present successes and also helps the instructor or parent to know what the child needs to work on in the future. There are various ways of accessing cognitive growth and development at this stage.
  1. State Examinations

    • Different states have various requirements for their students. For example, some students will take the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) in second grade. Another common exam administered to this age group is the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills. These examinations serve to test different areas of the students comprehension. For example, some sections of these tests are geared toward mathematics while others are geared towards vocabulary and reading comprehension skills.

    Games

    • Games can help access a child's cognitive ability. The game could serve as a way for you to monitor and record the child's progress. Children can play Chinese checkers, chess or card games with one another while you assess how they use their thinking skills in these games. Putting together puzzles or working on crossword puzzles and word searches are other game ideas to utilize.

    Scavenger Hunts

    • Assess the ability of the children in the class to use clues to find various items. For example, you could use a rhyme to point the children in the right direction or you could give them a clue such as "You'll find the next hint next to the number that equals two times two." Focus the scavenger hunt on a current topic that the class is talking about, such as numbers of the planets.

    Work Stations

    • Different students learn in different ways and have various cognitive abilities. Set up work stations in the classroom and note students' strengths and weaknesses. Ideas for stations include a writing section, an arts and crafts area, a box of props and costumes and a section with a variety of play tools. Allow students to rotate from one section to another, making sure that each student is at each section one time.
