Activities in a College Fair

Whereas some colleges are held in high regard for their athletic programs, others excel in disciplines such as business or veterinary medicine. High school students face a tough decision when deciding which college to attend because variables such as location, campus size and fees all factor into the equation. The National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) holds over 70 fairs per year in the United States with representatives from typically 200 post-secondary institutions who can answer questions about their colleges. Fair activities permit students and parents to accrue information needed to help them decide on a college
  1. Informative Workshops

    • Prospective students and their parents can attend individual sessions or forums dealing with a specific area of interest to them. College and other experts host these workshops. Topics include pertinent details regarding issues such as college admission requirements, financial aid requirements, disability services or the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) qualifications.

    Counseling Center

    • This activity center generally has high school and college counselors available to provide pertinent information about specific topics, for instance, how to prepare a college plan or how to write a college entrance essay. Students may also find answers to questions such as what colleges are looking for from applicants or what high school classes and credits they need to graduate with in order to gain college admission.

    Resource Center

    • According to the NACAC, as of 2011, post-secondary enrollment has increased 23 percent over the past 10 years making college acceptance more competitive than ever. Students can visit the resource center at college fairs to help them find additional materials they may need to gain entrance to college. Examples of these materials include scholarship information, SAT test preparation courses or companies that can provide financial options.

    Individual College Fair Activities

    • Many colleges and universities hold their own college fairs so high school students and their parents can visit the campus in order to finalize which college they choose to attend. In addition to usual activities such as counseling, workshops and resources, students can tour the campus to get a better idea of what they can expect if they attend. In some cases, colleges provide added fun and amusement for visiting students by arranging extracurricular activities such as hiking, skating and touring.
