Before reading the book, have students create invitations to Miss Spider's party. Show them the book as a pre-reading activity and have them create the invitations based on what they think the book is about. Additionally, give each student an envelope and teach them the appropriate format to use for addressing envelopes. They could mail the invitations to family members.
Set up the classroom for an actual tea party. Serve iced tea and biscuits or other cookies. Consider inviting parents to the event. Scatter plastic bugs on the table. As you are reading the story, ask students to find the bug that you are reading about. You could award a small prize to the person who finds the most bugs in the shortest amount of time.
Have students make their own spiders before reading the book. They can decorate Styrofoam balls with wiggly eyes, markers and/or paints in any way they choose. Provide them with eight black pipe cleaners. Tell students to push these pipe cleaners into the ball to make Miss Spider's legs. You could put all of the spiders on display in the classroom, or you might want to have students use the spiders to act out the story as you read it.
Incorporate music into your lessons about Miss Spider. Allow children to listen to "I'm a Little Teapot" and "The Itsy Bitsy Spider" before you read "Miss Spider's Tea Party." Ask younger children what these two songs have to do with the book, as the connections will be obvious to older children. Have a Miss Spider party in your classroom and sing "Happy Birthday" to Miss Spider before you cut the cake.
