How to Teach Pronunciation to Young Learners

Think about the way you say a word. If you mispronounce it, the listener may not understand what you're saying. How your message is received can be greatly affected by your pronunciation. Most people learn how to pronounce words in the proper manner as children, both at school and in the home. While crucial to effective communication, methods of teaching proper pronunciation to young learners may not be readily apparent.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a book at the student's reading level or slightly higher.

    • 2

Line by line, read a page slowly, then have the student read after you.

    • 3

Note words that are mispronounced. Write each of them on a flashcard.

    • 4

Show the student one card at a time. Pronounce the word, then have the student repeat it.

    • 5

If one word is particularly troublesome, break it down so the child can hear how the sounds meld together.

    • 6

Go back to the book, and have the student read the text again.

    • 7

Repeat this exercise, adding more difficult words as the student progresses.
