Gingko Biloba Science Projects

Choosing a project for science class can be a daunting task. Consider focusing a project on the herbal supplement, ginkgo biloba. Used for helping memory loss and improving circulation, ginkgo biloba is one of the highest selling natural remedies on the alternative medicine market. Still under review with the Federal Drug Administration, ginkgo biloba has shown noticed improvement in some patients with signs of memory loss, anxiety and poor circulation.
  1. Protecting Against Alzheimers

    • Some studies conducted have shown results of improving memory in older patients. In experiments performed with patients, the Brain Research Institute at the University of California Los Angeles found "that for people taking ginkgo biloba, improved recall correlated with better brain function in key brain memory centers." Consider a presentation based on these findings and create a graph showing the process of studies conducted over six months, noting when improvement was found or if it decreased. Make sure information on the placebo is also accounted for showing any changes during testing.

    Energy Drinks

    • Several brands of energy drinks on the market tout ginkgo biloba as one of the main ingredients. Research drinks which contain ginkgo biloba. Purchase at least two, also buying one that does not contain ginkgo biloba. Since energy drinks contain high amounts of caffeine, ask for an adult volunteer. Before drinking the beverage, ask the volunteer five questions, which will be asked again later. The volunteer should drink at least half of the energy drink supplied. Once consumed, interview the volunteer over a four hour period, noting any energy increases. Repeat the five questions from the beginning of the experiment seeing if they can recall answers verbatim. Record results.

    Gingko Biloba Side Effects

    • Like traditional medicines, alternative medicines have side effects. According to the Mayo Clinic, "ginkgo may theoretically affect insulin and blood sugar levels." Hypoglycemics and diabetics are two groups of patients who are affected by this herb's natural blood-thinning ability. Research the side effects of ginkgo biloba, creating a presentation showing ill effects on patients. Research cases where patients have experienced bleeding disorders or seizures. Consider asking a local doctor about the effect a pregnant woman would have if taking ginkgo biloba through her pregnancy and if it's considered harmful to a fetus. Gather findings for class presentation.

    Ginkgo Biloba and Claudication

    • Claudication is a condition where blocked arteries cause leg pain and cramping. Consider designing a presentation showing how ginkgo biloba can help patients with this issue. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, "analysis of eight published studies revealed that people taking ginkgo tend to walk roughly 34 meters farther than those taking placebo." Determine through research if ginkgo biloba was the catalyst or present the reasoning that the patients may have seen leg improvement as a result of increasing cardiovascular activity.
