How to Do a Scatter Plot on a Calculator

Scatter plot graphs are a simple visual representation of dependent and independent variables that are measurable. In other words, the relationship between the two variables is represented in a simple to interpret visual trend. To create a scatter plot on a calculator you need to use a graphing calculator. The TI-83/84 is a standard graphing calculator that's straightforward and easy to use. With the push of a few buttons you'll create an accurate scatter plot out of your collected data.

Instructions

  1. Clearing Old Data

    • 1

      Press the "Stat" button on the calculator found on the second row of buttons from the top.

      Press "Enter" to go to the edit screen, and use the arrow keys to highlight "L1," found at the top-left corner.

      Press "Clear" to remove previously imputed data. Press the "Right" arrow button and press "Clear" to remove the data under "L2."

    Plotting a Scatter Plot

      Press the "Stat" button on the calculator found on the second row of buttons from the top.

      Press "Enter" to access the edit screen. Enter the numbers corresponding to the x-axis section of your data chart under "L1" and press "Enter" after each number.

      Press the right arrow key to move to the "L2" section. Type in all the numbers corresponding to the y-axis section of your data chart and press "Enter" after each number.

      Press the "2nd" button followed by the "Stat Plot" button ,which is also the "Y=" button found directly below the screen.

      Press the "Enter" button twice. Press "Zoom" followed by "9" to set the scale for the graph so that it's entirely visible on the screen.
