How to Find Answers to Dividing Fractions

Fractions consist of two numbers: the numerator and the denominator. The numerator is the top number. The denominator is the bottom number. Fractions can be resolved into whole numbers. Fractions can also represent decimals and mixed numbers. Fractions can be a simpler way to write repeating decimals. Algebraically, fractions represent the numerator being divided by the denominator. Two fractions that need to be divided can be written as one big fraction by using the inverse of the denominator.

Instructions

    • 1

Set up the two fractions so the fraction that is being divided is on top, or to the right, of the fraction that it is being divided by. Example: 1/2 divided by 2/3 would be set up as (1/2)/(2/3).

    • 2

Find the inverse of the denominator by flipping it. Example: 2/3 becomes 3/2.

    • 3

Multiply the numerator by the inverse of the denominator. Example: (1/2 )/(2/3) becomes (1/2) X (3/2) OR (1X3)/(2X2).
