Making Past Tense Sentences

In English grammar, past tense sentences are used to describe an action that began and ended in the past. Past tense verbs are often but not always indicated by the -ed ending (eg, walked, talked, asked, danced or looked). Past tense verbs follow the subject to which they refer; for example: John walked, the girl danced, the dog barked. Sometimes, a past tense sentence indicates the length of time for which the action happened; for example: I lived in New York for two years, I walked for two hours or I drove for three days.

Instructions

    • 1

Begin a simple past tense sentence with a noun. Nouns are people, places or things. The noun should be the entity who completed the past tense action.

    • 2

Conjugate the verb to the past tense.

    • 3

Add an auxiliary verb if necessary. In the case of past tense sentences, this is usually "did," a conjugation of the verb "to do."

    • 4

Add an adverb to modify the verb, if necessary. Adverbs often end in -ly.

    • 5

Read your sentence aloud to make sure that it makes sense. If you are not a native English speaker, check the correctness of the sentence by reading it to someone who is.
