Look at a square. A square is a shape that looks like a box. It is two dimensional and always contains four sides. The four sides are congruent, meaning they are exactly the same size and shape. Squares are common shapes that can be found in many places. Some examples of squares can include tables, board games and carpet squares.
Learn about right angles. A square contains four angles within it. Each angle is considered a right angle; which means each angle is 90 degrees.
Understand other characteristics of a square. A square is considered a quadrilateral; which is a shape that contains four sides. Other quadrilaterals include rectangles and rhombuses.
Divide a square in half. If you divide a square in half right down the middle, either vertically or horizontally, each side of the square is identical in shape and side. This is called symmetry.
Learn about symmetrical characteristics. Shapes and items that are considered symmetrical have the two sides that are identical if divided down the middle. The outside of the human body is considered symmetrical because if it is divided down the middle from a person's head to toes, each side is the same.
Combine these two principles. Whenever a square is divided directly down the center, two pieces are formed. With squares, because each side is congruent, the two sides are always symmetrical. They are always the same size and shape.
