Pass out green construction paper for the children to tear into leaf shapes. Children may also use safety scissors to cut out leaves shaped like teardrops or almonds.
Give yellow paper to the children to create more leaves for their tree poems. Place the cut and torn leaves into a pile on the table.
Tear or cut out tree trunks from brown construction paper for the children and give a tree trunk to each child. Older and more confident children should cut out their own tree trunks from the paper.
Place the brown tree trunks on the table in front of the children. Have the children glue the leaves to the tops of their tree trunks. The trees should look like full trees with many leaves.
Ask the children to describe a tree and their favorite things about trees. Write these ideas on each child's tree leaves. Depending on the number of children in your class, you may need to enlist the help of parent volunteers for this step. Older children can write their own poems on the leaves of the tree, or the entire class can create a group poem.
Read aloud all the tree poems the children constructed.
