How to Make an Iceberg Model for Kids

Making a model of an iceberg is messy and simple, two things that make it a successful activity for kids. Use chicken wire and newspaper to make a papier-mâché model. One of the most fascinating things about an iceberg is that 90 percent of its mass is under water. Mount your model through a piece of cardboard to simulate the waterline and show this drastic difference in mass.

  • Newspaper

Instructions

    • 1

Shape some chicken wire into a round mass and secure with twist ties. Bend the wire into some points around the mass to give the shape more irregularity. Position the mass on its flattest point on your work surface.

    • 2

Cut newspaper into strips. Put some flour into a bowl. Add a small amount of water to make a thick paste. Dip a newspaper strip into the paste. Bring it out of the paste with one hand and use the other hand to squeeze off excess paste. Place the strip on the chicken wire. Repeat with newspaper strips until the entire mass of chicken wire is covered, except the part that is touching the work surface. Avoid overlapping the strips as much as possible.

    • 3

Cover the mass with two to three more layers of newspaper strips. Let it dry overnight.

    • 4

Turn the mass onto its side and cover the bottom of the chicken wire with three to four layers of newspaper strips dipped in flour paste. Let it dry overnight.

    • 5

Cut white tissue paper into strips. Make more flour paste. Cover the flat part of the mass in four layers of tissue paper strips. Let it dry overnight.

    • 6

Place the model back on its flat side and cover the rest of it with four layers of white tissue paper strips and flour paste. Let it dry overnight. Repeat this the following day if you can still see the newsprint through the white tissue paper.

    • 7

Cut one side off of a cardboard box. Measure the distance around the iceberg model about 10 percent of the way from the top. Make a circle of this size on the cardboard, and cut out the circle. Cover the cardboard with aluminum foil.

    • 8

Slip the cardboard over the iceberg mass to where it stops, then tape it in place from the bottom with white masking tape.

    • 9

Color the aluminum foil with blue permanent marker to simulate water.
