How to Write a Line Segment

A line segment is a subset of a geometric line. Unlike the line, which stretches infinitely in both directions, the line segment has a beginning and an end defined by endpoints. These endpoints are often assigned letters, which are used to name the segment they define. The line segment symbol, which looks like a straight line, is placed above these letters to distinguish the segment from any lines or rays that also run through these points.

Instructions

    • 1

Identify the endpoints of the line segment. For instance, if the segment begins at point A and ends at point D, its endpoints are A and D.

    • 2

Write the letters of both endpoints. They should be in capital letters. For instance, a segment with endpoints A and D is named "AD."

    • 3

Draw a straight line over the name. This identifies it as a line segment as opposed to a line, which would have arrowheads at each end of the line.
