How to Round Averages

An average is a mathematical term that is also referred to as a mean. Calculating an average helps you to analyze a set of data. For example, teachers average students' scores on various assignments to determine their overall grades. In some cases, such as in the example of determining grades, you may want to calculate a rounded average. You can perform this task by using basic mathematical calculations, such as addition and division.

    • 1

Add a set of data. For example, you might have the following figures: 88, 67, 92, 77, 84, 87 and 82. Adding these figures gives you a sum of 577.

    • 2

Divide the sum from step one by the number of values in the set of data. In this example, you would divide 577 by 7 to get 82.42857142857142857.... (the numbers following the decimal continue to repeat).

    • 3

Round the average that you obtained in step two to the nearest place value, as determined by your choice or your standards. For example, if you are averaging grades, your school may have a policy that says teachers must round averages to the nearest whole number. In this case, you would look at the number to the right of the whole number, which is 4. If the number is 4 or less, you round down. If the number is 5 or greater, you round up. Therefore, in this case, you would round the average to 82.
