How to Tell if an Object Is Symmetrical

Symmetry is defined as a pattern of self-similarity that is proven through the rules of geometry. In ancient Greece, symmetry indictated an object had pleasing proportion and balance. Symmetrical objects are differentiated from asymmetrical objects (objects that are not symmetrical) through several steps in a mathematical proof. These steps are easy to learn and after a little practice, you will be able to determine symmetry by glancing at an object. The concept of symmetry is taught in early elementary grades.

Instructions

    • 1

Place an object squarely in front of you or stand in front of it.

    • 2

Locate the center of the object through exact measurement or by using your best judgment.

    • 3

Draw a line through the center of the object from the top to the bottom.

    • 4

Determine the object to be symmetrical through the middle if the left half matches the right half exactly.

    • 5

Draw a line through the center from left to right.

    • 6

Determine the object to be symmetrical from two sides if the top half is identical to the bottom half and the right half is identical to the left half.
