Direct or Inverse Variation Activities

Direct and inverse variation concepts can be strengthened and tested using online and printed tutorials, games, worksheets and quizzes. Students tend to absorb educational materials more readily with hands-on activities that engage their imaginations and skills more actively than standard lecture and textbook classes. The Internet provides both virtual and printed opportunities to mix education with entertainment.
  1. Battleship, Online Tutorials and Practice Problems

    • Quia hosts an interactive direct and inverse variation of the classic game "Battleship" on its website. Students must answer questions about direct and indirect variations to be allowed to proceed with their turns in attempts to sink opponents' battleships. The Oswego City School District Regents Exam Prep Center has online lessons, practice questions and teacher resources for direct and indirect variations on its site. Practice problems include direct and indirect variation problems, as well as combination problems. Answers are provided with explanations for all of the problems.

    Video Tutorial and Activity Worksheets

    • An online tutorial video is available at the Home Schooler's Resources website. The video teaches students how to find the constant k and shows how values go up and down inversely or up with direct variations. An accompanying worksheet is also provided, with problems for students to solve based on information in the video. Santa Monica College has a PDF file available on its site with activities for direct and indirect variations. Four examples are worked for students to observe and then there are four problems for students to apply the information in the examples. Answers are provided in scrambled form.

    Direct and Inverse Variation Bingo

    • Students can play a direct and indirect variation bingo game using a bingo card template available from the Dr. Robinson.com website. The Algebra section, halfway down the Teachers' page on the site, contains the link to the bingo template, which is in a Word document. The document includes bingo cards with variation terms on them, as well as blank bingo cards for students to create their own cards. The document also includes problem cards to print, cut out and then read for players to solve and cover spaces on their bingo cards.

Virtual and Printed Flashcards, Worksheet and Quiz

    • Quizlet has a direct and inverse variation set of flashcards with accompanying worksheet and customizable quiz on its website. The flashcards can be used virtually with an audio component to assist with pronunciation, or they can be printed out for use in the classroom or home. Worksheets also have audio or the option of printing; the quiz can also be taken online or printed with an answer sheet. Customize the quiz for true or false, matching, multiple choice or written answers.
