3-D Project Ideas on the Eight Parts of Speech for 7th Graders

By seventh grade, students generally know the eight parts of speech. However, as they begin to write more complex papers at the middle school age, they often need reminders. Incorporating 3-D projects into the curriculum will show students that reviewing old material does not always need to be a dull endeavor.
  1. Students as the Display

    • Have the students act as the three-dimensional props. Play charades by having one student select a card. The card will have one of the eight parts of speech such as a noun, verb or adjective written on it, as well as an example of that word. Choose to have the students guess either both the word and the part of speech that the student is acting out or only the part of speech.

    Models

    • Have students make models of the eight parts of speech and decorate the classroom with them. Let the students choose from different varieties of materials, such as paper, clay or blocks. They should make each of the parts of speech out of the material and then hang or place the part of speech next to a word in the classroom that belongs to that category. For example, they would place the word "noun" next to a desk.

    Movies

    • This project is appropriate for students in an elective film-making class or for those attending a special arts high school. Follow directions on the 3-D Journal website for making a three-dimensional movie. Create one together with your class, and then divide the students into groups to create their own. Have them make simple movies where they interview each other about the parts of speech or where special effects make the names and definitions of parts of speech fly, zoom or flash into view.

    Presentations

    • Have the students make presentations about the eight parts of speech using three-dimensional props. Divide the students into groups and make each group responsible for explaining a different part of speech, defining it and giving examples of it in everyday life. Give them creative freedom with this project by allowing them to make a movie, create models or use three-dimensional objects from around the classroom to help demonstrate their points.
