Teachers have to be aware of the comments and interactions between students and stop inappropriate, offensive language. When students see a teacher stop this kind of prejudice, they are reminded that it is unacceptable to belittle others based on race, religion and other potentially divisive qualities. It is also important to talk about people in the particular field of study that are both male and female and of various races. Showing students that all people can be successful is another way to help squash prejudicial thinking and behavior.
Teachers have to be careful not to show favoritism to any students. This action emphasizes the need for fairness and helps show by example that students should also treat others fairly. In addition, teachers must police unfair treatment between students. The students cannot be allowed to treat someone as inferior within the classroom and should be punished if they do.
Establishing classroom rules at the beginning of the year is an important way that teachers help develop students morally. The consequences for these rules should also be outlined, ideally in the syllabus that students have to sign and return to the teacher to show that they understand what is expected of them and what will happen if they break a rule. Even more important, obviously, is enforcing these rules and consequences. Teachers have to make sure not to bend the rules, because if they do, students will get the message that it is okay to bend or break any rule, and that message does not help their moral development.
Besides not being prejudiced, treating everyone as equals and enforcing rules, teachers also develop students morally just by being moral people. Showing compassion for issues that affect our world and being aware of current events and tying these events and issues into the lessons help show students that they too should be aware of the happenings in the world and care about things that might not directly affect their lives but are injustices nonetheless. Following the rules of the school and society also make teachers good role models, and the simple fact that they are teachers shows that they care about helping others and making a difference in the world, which hopefully the students they teach also care about.
