Fun Crafts for French Class

Add some rewarding activities to a French class by implementing a craft to support the topic of study. Learning to speak a foreign language can be an intimidating, but important task, and crafts can provide an interactive, tactile activity that helps students gain interest and maintain focus on the subject.
  1. French Flag Crafts

    • The French flag features a blue, a white and a red vertical strip.

Younger students will enjoy creating the French flag in a French class. The French flag features three vertical strips of blue, white and red. Cut three strips of colored paper in the French colors to create the flag. Use the flags to decorate a classroom.

Older students can create a large flag out of butcher paper taped to the wall. Use paint to create a flag that can be a centerpiece for a French party or just as a classroom decoration.

Another way to make a flag is to start with white fabric. Let students cut and paint their own French flag with fabric paint.

    Eiffel Tower Crafts

    • The Eiffel Tower is one of France's most widely recognized landmarks.

Create Eiffel Tower crafts in a French class. Preschool and elementary students can build an Eiffel Tower out of building blocks. Provide blocks and a picture of the Eiffel tower for the children to reference.

Make an edible and yummy Eiffel Tower craft using sugar wafer cookies as the building blocks and frosting as the glue. Build four legs for the base of the Eiffel Tower by sticking four wafer cookies in a vertical position to a plate using frosting to keep them in place. Add a flat, horizontal layer of wafers, then another four vertical wafers. Add one more horizontal layer (break the horizontal wafers to size, as the tower tapers toward the top) and add a single vertical wafer to form the top of the tower. Make a French flag out of paper and stick it to the tip with a toothpick.

Another way to craft a model Eiffel Tower is with toothpicks and modeling clay. Reference a picture of the Eiffel Tower before building the model.

    French Arts Crafts

    • Renoir was a French Impressionist painter.

France is known for great art including fine paintings, culinary arts and fashion. Explore French arts through craft projects. Show pictures of works by French Impressionists such as Renoir. Ask students to create their own pictures in Renoir's style. His paintings showed pretty women and children in fashionable clothes. He painted beautiful landscapes as well. Have students choose subjects similar to Renoir or choose more modern subjects, but create pictures in Impressionist style.

Explore French culinary arts by holding a potluck. Ask each student to bring a French food to share. Beware of allergies and ask the students to have the recipe available to share with fellow students.

Let students try their hand at fashion design. Give them two rolls of toilet paper and some tape and ask them to create a fashion using the materials and a fellow student as the model. Hold a fashion show and play French music as the models strut down the catwalk.

    Other Crafts for French Class

    • Have students create flash cards with French words and phrases. Let them write French words on the fronts of the flash cards and draw pictures on the reverse sides. Give students craft items such as colorful pens and magazine pages to cut and add to the scenes.

Let the students draw maps of France on paper or let them create 3-D maps out of modeling clay. Display the maps in the classroom or at a special event to celebrate the end of the semester.
