How to Review Multiplying and Dividing for Measurements

Multiplying or dividing regular numbers is simple enough, but when you're working with measurements, such as inches or feet, it's important to remember to convert the numbers correctly. Improperly converting measurements could easily mess up home improvements, from furniture making to sewing projects. To avoid such problems, you need to know the correct conversions for what you are measuring, including both linear measurements and weights.

Instructions

  1. Linear Measurements

    • 1

Measure your object with a tape measure, and write down the measurement. Measure twice to ensure accuracy.

    • 2

Convert feet into inches by multiplying the measured length in feet by the number 12 --- because there are 12 inches in one foot --- and then add on any remaining inches after you've multiplied the number. For example, if your object is 5 feet 3 inches long, your math problem would like look (5 x 12) + 3 = 63 inches.

    • 3

Convert inches into feet by dividing the total inches by the number 12 and then add on the remaining inches as a whole. For example, if your object is 100 inches long, your math problem would look like 100 ÷ 12 = 8 remainder 4, meaning 100 inches is 8 feet, 4 inches long.

    Weight Measurements

    • 4

Weigh your object and write down the amount.

    • 5

Convert ounces into pounds by dividing the measurement by the number 16, because there are 16 ounces in 1 pound. For example, if your object weighed 32 ounces, your math problem would be 32 ÷ 16 = 2. If the object weighed 34 ounces, you would add on the remaining 2 ounces, indicating that it weighed 2 pounds, 2 ounces.

    • 6

Convert pounds into ounces by multiplying the number by 16. For example, if your object is 5 pounds, it weighs 80 ounces because 5 x 16 = 80.
