What Qualifies As a Project?

The word project permeates daily conversation. Many pursuits, such as building a garden shed, creating a work of art or developing an invention share common attributes that qualify them as projects. Understanding these shared characteristics will deepen the understanding of what exactly constitutes a project and what doesn't. Projects have distinct traits that separate them from ongoing, repetitive and common operations.
  1. Purpose

    • Every project has a specific aim that seeks to provide a solution to a problem. This means projects are temporary by nature with specific start and end dates. Solving a problem through a project requires fully analyzing the need for a solution to determine what will work best. As a result, projects tend to provide multiple solutions which aim to have lasting social implementations and changes.

    Characteristics

    • In developing a solution to a problem projects often result in the creation of a new product or service. In this way projects are new, fresh, one-time efforts breaking away from the basic everyday functions and repetitive work operations. Major projects require thorough planning and team coordination. Each project stems from a degree of uncertainty and risk which requires investigation, innovation and adaptation to complete successfully. Furthermore projects are organized into stages making it easy to assess gathered information and results.

    Structure

    • The first phase of a projects structure is definition which requires answers to a few key questions to determine its parameters and purpose. The second phase is planning how to achieve the solution to the problem presented by the project. The third phase is implementing the planned actions to achieve a solution. The fourth phase is to monitor and fine tune the solution. The fifth and final phase is to evaluate the quality of the solution.

    Project Management

    • Project management refers to a person responsible for evaluating and overseeing the completion of the project within the allocated time. The project manger ensures the team has the materials necessary to complete the project. This person is responsible for assessing the budget, acquiring sponsors and managing team disputes. The project manger determines the completion of a project when the goals are achieved or determines the goals are not achievable.
