The book "Father Fox's Pennyrhymes" features Father Fox and his fox family. Help children make small fox toys to enhance the reading of the book. Use a toilet paper roll as the body. Paint the roll rust red and add googly eyes, a black pom pom nose and fabric scrap clothes. Glue a paper tail to the fox to complete the look. Have children hold their fox toys during the reading of the book.
Have children play the role of Father Fox from the book, "Father Fox's Pennyrhymes." Make a mask by cutting a fox face out of orange craft foam. Embellish the mask with small pieces of craft foam and thread for whiskers. Make a tail by cutting the shape out of craft foam. Punch a hole at the top of the tail and thread a piece of yarn through the hole to serve as a belt to keep the tail in place. Have children recite some of the "pennyrhymes" while wearing their costumes.
Encourage children to memorize the verses from the book, "Father Fox's Pennyrhymes." Many of the rhymes in the book are four lines long. A pre-school teacher can assign one line of a rhyme to four different child to memorize. Have children who memorize the same rhyme stand together and recite the rhyme line by line in front of the class or invite parents to a short performance.
Have children create their own pictures for the book, "Father Fox's Pennyrhymes." Read the book and let children study the pictures. Then, ask them to create their own illustration for the book. Another way to enhance the reading of the book is to have children create puppets representing the characters. Children can use socks to create the puppets and use felt pieces as ears and tail. Use googly eyes and a small black pom pom to complete the puppet. Have children recite the rhymes in the book with their puppets.
