How to Convert Milligrams to Tablespoons

"Metric" and "imperial" are systems of measurements. A milligram, abbreviated as "mg," is a metric system mass unit. It is one-thousandth of a gram. A tablespoon, shortened to "tbsp," on the other hand, is an imperial system volume unit. "Mass" and "volume" refer to properties of matter. You cannot change one property of matter into another, therefore, you cannot convert a milligram into a tablespoon as such. However you can determine how many milligrams are in a tablespoon if you also know the density of the substance being measured. Such calculations are often performed in the pharmacological field.

Instructions

    • 1

Write down the substance's mass measurement in milligram units.

      Example: 120 mg

    • 2

Divide the milligram measurement by 1000 to convert the milligrams measurement to grams.

      Example: 120 / 1000 = 0.12 g

    • 3

Write down the substance's density measurement in grams per millimeter units (g/ml).

      Example: 16 g/ml

    • 4

Divide the substance's mass measurement in grams by its density measurement. The result is the substance's volume measurement in milliliters.

      Example: 0.12 / 16 = 0.0075 ml

    • 5

Multiply substance's volume measurement in milliliters by 0.0676 to convert the milliliters to tablespoons. This is the approximate amount of tablespoons for the given mass (milligram) and density amounts.

      Example: 0.0075 * 0.0676 = 0.000507
