Tacky Dress Ideas for School

School sports teams and clubs like to show their spirit and unity, and a popular way to do it is by holding a "Tacky Dress Day." The members of the club or team wear tacky clothes and accessories in a fun display of unity. Achieving a tacky look for school can be as simple as mixing and mismatching articles of clothing you already have, but thrift and second-hand stores can be a treasure trove of tacky, one-off pieces that don't cost much.
  1. Clashing Colors and Patterns

    • Choose articles of clothing that have bold and eye-catching colors, textures and patterns, and wear them all for a Tacky Dress Day at school. Wear long leg warmers over a pair of loud pants, tights or leggings, and layer shirts, tanks and sweatshirts in clashing colors and patterns to achieve this look. Mix floral prints, stripes, zigzags and animal prints. Wear two different shoes that you would ordinarily ignore to complete the crazy ensemble.

    Appliqués and Adornments

    • Look for themed holiday sweaters at thrift or vintage stores -- the more baubles, sequins and appliqués, the better. Pair a Christmas sweater with black-and-orange striped leggings to maximize your tacky holiday confusion. Iron-on appliqués and adhesive clothing adornments are also available in many craft and fabric stores. Gather as many of these as you like and apply them to an old jacket, t-shirt or pair of pants for top tackiness.

    Outdated Styles

    • Clothing styles of years past can have a uniquely tacky appeal. The 1980s are a common culprit for clothes that are now considered tacky -- look for neon, acid wash, flat-brim visors, big, colorful sunglasses or glasses frames, leg warmers, tutus, leggings and off-the-shoulder sweatshirts to get a tacky '80s look. The orange, yellow and brown color scheme that epitomized style in the 1970s can also make your outfit a cheesy feast for the eyes.

    Garish Detailing

    • Choose articles of clothing you would ordinarily never dream of wearing. Wear a blazer with massive shoulder pads. Don an ankle-length dress with a lace collar and a pastel floral print. Gather as much polyester, acrylic, nylon and Spandex as you can find. Put on more than one hat in contrasting colors and styles. Wear coordinating separates that are intended to be worn one at a time -- long skirts with elastic waistbands and button-up shirts available from mail-order catalogs are inexpensive items that can have maximum tackiness.
