Enlarge photographs to show the differences between city living, suburban life and rural landscapes. City photos might include building skylines in highly populated cities such as New York while photos of rural areas could show farm fields. A photo of a street in the suburbs with homes close together would demonstrate suburban living.
Create a PowerPoint presentation to demonstrate the characteristics of rural, city and suburban areas. Use interior or exterior photos or both in your presentation. A photo of the inside of a large business office could represent city life while a photo of inside a barn could demonstrate rural living. A backyard pool could show a typical suburban home.
Present maps of different areas to demonstrate the differences in size among city, suburban and rural areas. Compare how many stores might be on one city street versus how many acres a typical farm might have. Show a map of a suburban area to indicate how many homes might be found on a typical street.
Show population graphs to show the differences in the number of people inhabiting city areas versus rural and suburban areas. On the graphs, point out how many people live in a five-block area in the city compared with a five-block area in the suburbs and compared to an area of land in the country equivalent to five city blocks.
Ask students to write about a very small town, a city block and a suburban neighborhood if you are teaching about the differences between cities, suburban areas and rural communities. Articles should include commercial and residential information and outline methods of transportation.
