To make a salt and light candle, you will need small baby food jars, colored tissue paper, glue, salt and tea light candles. Thin out the glue slightly by mixing glue and a small amount of water in a small bowl. Cover the entire outside of a baby food jar with the glue and attach small bits of colored tissue paper to it. While the glue is still wet, take the jar and roll it in a plate of salt to add a textured sparkle. Place a tea light candle in the jar and let the jar completely dry.
Make salt jars to remind students to be the salt and light in the world. For this, you will need small baby food jars, various types of salts, cloth, ribbon, glue, markers and oils such as lavender or eucalyptus. Fill a baby food jar with salt, such as Epsom salt or sea salt. Add several drops of bath oil to the jar. Use an adhesive label and write a scripture verse on it, such as, “You are the salt of the earth.” Attach the label to the jar. Cut out a piece of fabric in the shape of a circle that is about 1 inch larger than the jar lid. Place the fabric on the jar and put the lid on top. This will serve as a decoration. Tie a string or ribbon around the jar to decorate it more.
Purchase cheap plastic or glass salt shakers. Let each student decorate a shaker using markers, paints or by attaching construction paper to it. Give each student a label with a Bible passage about this subject printed on it. Let the students attach the label to their shakers. When finished, fill the shakers with salt.
To illustrate the subject of being light in this world, have Sunday school students make a lantern using a small milk carton. Clean out the milk cartons prior to use and have each student open up their carton so the top is completely open. Give the children paints and let them paint the cartons. Let them punch holes in the carton using various shaped hole punches, such as stars or circle shapes. When dry, place a battery-operated tea light candle in each lantern and close the tops of the cartons. Use a pipe cleaner to form a handle for the lantern. When the candle is lit, the light will shine through the punched holes.
