Talk to the kids about common ways they use technology. You can have them work in groups to create a list or provide answers as you write them. Kids should talk about listening to music or writing papers. You also want to discuss ownership. Have the kids make a separate list about what types of things people own, like songs or books.
Discuss with them the responsibilities of using technology and the consequences. Start the discussion talking about not copying from another classmate's paper or adding music to their social media websites.
Explain the copyright laws and fair use guidelines. You can use a brochure or handout you’ve made. Provide the definition of copyright laws then expound on the different ways to violate the laws. Give examples of copyright violations such as computer fraud and using material without permission.
Separate the students into four groups. Instruct them to talk about copyright laws. Provide them with one copyright infringement remedy to act out in front of the class. One group should talk about injunctions which prohibit the violator from using his created material. The impounding and disposition group discusses a court talking all the copies of the materials from the violator. Another group shows how the violator may pay statutory damages. The fourth group talks about the violator paying court and lawyer fees.
Show them the ways to properly cite electronic and paper sources. You also want to provide information on how much of a song or book they can use.
