Phonics Lessons on Letters and Words & How They Work

Phonics lessons teach children to recognize the shapes and sounds of letters to help them develop the skills necessary to both read, speak and write a language well. There are many different kinds of phonics lessons and methods of teaching (such as vocal repetition, ocular recognition and pattern identification), each of which help children learn phonics in various ways as they age.
  1. Vocal Repetition

    • Use vocal repetition not just to help children learn the sounds of individual letters, but to help them identify syllables. This skill is often taught in preschool and continued through other grades; an instructor will demonstrate the sound of a letter, or series of letters together, and ask a student (or class) to repeat the sounds. You can pair this with other activities, such as asking students to identify which letters make which sounds, or to match rhyming words.

    Sounding Out Words

    • Sounding out words is a lesson often used to teach children how to accurately read and say a written word. In these cases, an instructor will present a word (beginning with single-syllable words and gradually working up to multi-syllabic words) and ask the student or students to identify the sounds which make up the word.

    Prefixes and Suffixes

    • A more advanced extension of phonics, the instruction of prefixes and suffixes draws on earlier phonics lessons and requires students to divide words into syllables, and use deductive reasoning regarding the roots of those syllables to determine the sounds and meanings of words. Such lessons are most often taught in elementary school grades 3-6.

    Online Resources

    • Many print-out phonics lesson plans, phonics games and other phonics-related resources are available (sometimes for free) online for both parents and educators who wish to help their children. Some examples include Kidzone.ws, Softschools.com and Mes-english.com. When searching for lesson plans and games, try to match the level of the activity with the practicing level of the student or students in mind.
