Gather materials based on the medium you choose for your poster. Since the poster is for a local event in the school, making the poster by hand with poster board and markers or paint is perfectly acceptable. If the school has the equipment to print large posters or the budget to print it at a copy shop, you can design the poster on a computer.
Compile the information that needs to be on the poster. While you want your poster to have an awesome design, it will not have any impact if you don't include the necessary information. Find out the date, time and location of the family fun night and what kind of activities will be included. If families need to buy tickets or bring anything to the event, include those details on the poster as well. Write down any pertinent information on a piece of paper and keep it close by when designing your poster. Don't include any unnecessary or superfluous information that will make the poster look crowded or too wordy.
Sketch out the basic design of the poster on a separate sheet of paper. If you want your poster to be truly awesome, you'll need an eye-catching design and plenty of color. Design graphics that represent some of the night's activities or go for a more abstract visual. Either way, don't let the visual elements of the poster obscure the important information that the poster has to convey.
Transfer your sketched ideas onto the poster. If you're making the poster by hand, use markers, paint or collage techniques to make your ideas come to life. If you're using a computer, use a design program to recreate your sketch. Carefully proofread the poster to make sure there are no errors. Print the poster out, making multiple copies if necessary.
Choose an appropriate location to hang your poster. Select a high-traffic area where many people will see it. Hang the poster carefully, securing it with strong tape or, if it is on a bulletin board, staples or pushpins.
