Candy is something most kids know about. Have students design a package for their favorite candy or for one they wish existed. The packaging could be a box or wrapper printed out and folded into shape. Judge the packaging based on the information contained on the label and whether it fulfills the basic criteria for a food label. The rest of the grade should be for attractiveness and creativity. The label should be something that appeals to the consumer. The box could also be designed to reflect the contents, such as a soccer ball-shaped box for soccer-themed chocolates.
Have students design a CD cover or booklet for their favorite band or for a compilation CD of music they like. The cover should include the artist names, song titles and playing times. Judge the project on completeness of the information listed on the cover, how well the artwork reflects the music, and creativity and appeal. The cover should make the consumer want to pick up the CD.
Students should bring in an empty jar or bottle and create a product and label for the container. The product can be water, soda, juice or apple sauce. The label should contain the ingredients, nutritional information, allergens and product name. Judge the labels based on attractiveness and inclusion of necessary information.
For each project, have the students write a paper or fill out a form related to the label or package they have created. The paper or form should address why they think the packaging will appeal to consumers, who they think the target consumer is, whether there is any information they feel should have been included on the packaging that wasn't, and how well the packaging conveys the image of the product and company.
