How to Choose Weights & Lifting Equipment

Exercising with weights and lifting equipment can greatly enhance your physique and overall health by trimming away body fat and increasing cardiovascular fitness and muscular strength. Deciding which type of exercise equipment is right for you be complicated if you have not identified your workout preferences. Consider the kinds of exercises you enjoy performing and your goals before making a choice.

Instructions

Select a series of free weights. Free weights are individual pieces of equipment you can lift by hand without the assistance of a machine or other devices. Free weights are beneficial for sculpting one area of the upper body -- such as biceps or forearms -- at a time. Free weights are easy to move and can be stored anywhere. Dumbbells and barbells are examples of free weights. If you are searching for lifting equipment to challenge your upper body that is convenient to transport, free weights may be right for you.

Select a multi-station exercise machine. A multi-station machine is designed as an in-home gym. These machines allow you to accomplish a number of different exercises you can't do with free weights. A multi-station exercise machine is stationary and is difficult to move, but it provides many different workouts that would require the use of multiple machines or free weights at an actual gym. Stations may include a lat pull-down device, a built-in bench press, a pectoral fly device and a leg curl mechanism. Multi-station machines often involve adjusting the weight of pre-installed weight plates to provide resistance. Choosing a multi-station machine is beneficial for those focusing on full body training.

Select a resistance cord and bar machine as a third exercise option. Resistance cords and bar machines, such as a Bowflex home gym, function similarly to standard multi-station machines but without the use of traditional weight plates. The Bowflex home gym builds muscle and increases flexibility. The resistance bar and cord technology allows muscles to stretch and constrict without causing as much pressure to tendons and joints as free weights or many traditional multi-station gyms do. If you are looking to build your body and increase flexibility, a Bowflex may be the ticket.
