What is the purpose of a paean?

A paean is a song or hymn of praise, typically addressed to a god or goddess. Paeans were originally sung in ancient Greece and Rome, and they were often used in religious ceremonies or as a way to express gratitude for a victory or other positive event. Today, paeans are still sometimes used in religious contexts, but they are also used in more secular settings, such as to celebrate a special event or to express admiration for someone or something.
