What is the difference between hyperbole and understatements?

Hyperbole and understatement are both literary devices used to create emphasis or effect in a text.

Hyperbole:

- Hyperbole is a figure of speech that uses exaggerated terms or descriptions to create emphasis or produce a strong emotional effect.

- It involves exaggeration or overstatement to emphasize or add dramatic effect to a statement.

- Examples: "I'm so hungry, I could eat a horse." or "I laughed so hard, I thought I was going to die."

Understatement:

- Understatement is a deliberate presentation of something as less significant or important than it actually is.

- Understatement uses mild or deliberately weak expressions to create emphasis through contrast.

- It often involves saying less than what is true to create a more subtle or understated effect.

- Examples: "She was disappointed with the results, to put it mildly." or "I'm feeling a bit under the weather today."
