Urdu, or Zaban-e-Urdu (meaning "Language of the Horde"), is a Persianised variety of the Hindustani language spoken in Northern Pakistan, Delhi and areas of Northern, Central, and Western India, and is the national language of Pakistan. Urdu came into being as a standardized register of Hindustani, when the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb made it the official language of his empire in the 17th century, and remains widely used in contemporary Pakistan and India.
