How to Create Nonfiction Books With Elementary Students

Books are a crucial part of education, yet many young children are not interested in books or feel intimidated by them. Creating a book will help children feel connected to books and empowered to interact with books in more ways than just as a passive consumer. Furthermore, writing a non-fiction book has the added advantage of learning deeply about the book's topic, and using that knowledge actively. This activity is best done as an individual activity; each child will gain a sense of ownership of her book, and those who are not social leaders will be able to participate fully.

Instructions

  1. Writing the Book

    • 1

Choose a topic or theme for the book. The topic should be related to your curriculum, but it needs to be specific so the students can cover it in a limited number of pages.

    • 2

Research the topic with your students and have them write down the most important pieces of information. They can also collect pictures or diagrams to put in the book.

    • 3

Give each student paper for the pages in his book. Each leaf of paper folds in half to make two pages. Students can either compose their book directly on these pages, or make a draft copy first.

    • 4

Create the cover, which should include the title of the book, the date, and the student's name. You or your students may also want to include a picture on the cover page. If you have a laminating machine at your school, you could laminate the covers for durability and aesthetics.

    Bookbinding

    • 5

Fold all the pages (including the cover) in half to mark the middle. Then, unfold them and lay them out in order.

    • 6

Punch a hole in the center of the middle crease with the awl. Then, punch two more holes, one above and one below, 2.5 inches from the center hole.

    • 7

Thread the string through the center hole, from the inside to the outside of the book. Then, thread it through the upper hole, back through the center hole, and through the lower hole. Both ends of the string should now be on the inside of the book. Tie them together securely and trim the ends.
