Verb Activities for Elementary School

In order to become a skillful and articulate writer, it is necessary to understand the different parts of speech. One of the most basic parts of speech in nearly all sentences are verbs, or action words. If you are an elementary school educator, promote an understanding of this fundamental part of speech with activities that spark students' attention.
  1. Verbs in Action

    • Bring verbs to life with this activity. On individual index cards, write different verbs. Ask a volunteer to select a card and act out the word written on it in front of the class. The classmate to correctly identify the verb from the actions of the acting student earns a point and takes his place as the new actor. The new actor selects a card and performs for his fellow classmates. The game continues in this manner until all the cards have been used. The player with the most points wins the game.

    Verb Drawings

    • Have students illustrate the actions indicated by various verbs. Provide each student with a verb and ask him to draw a picture that depicts the action indicated by the verb. For instance, if a student has been assigned the word "listen," she may draw an image of an ear with a hand cupping it or words going into an ear. Display the finished verb drawings around your classroom for students to use as inspiration while writing.

    Describing Verbs

    • In this activity, students try to identify the verb they have been assigned using clues given by their classmates. On sticky notes, write individual verbs and place one on each student's forehead. Place children in pairs and each pair has to provide clues that describe the verb on his partner's head. For example, if a child has the word "run" on his head, his partner may describe the word saying, "It's something you do in a race and it's gets you from one place to another quickly on your feet." The team to correctly identify their verbs first wins the game.

    Alternating Verbs

    • There are several different verbs that are used to describe a single action. In this activity, students review the names of verbs that describe a single action. On your classroom dry erase or chalkboard, write a verb --- "talk," for example. Divide your class into three or four teams. On your mark, the teams try to come up with a list of as many different verbs that can be used to replace the given word. A scribe for the team writes down all the verbs that are thought of and at the end of an allotted time period, another member of the team reads off the words on the list. The team to identify the most verbs wins this game.
