Word Wall Activities for Elementary School

A word wall is an interactive teaching tool for teachers in elementary school. The word wall is displayed in a prominent location and updated weekly. The word wall is used to teach high frequency words, names, the alphabet, and word families. Many teachers introduce up to five new words a week to students, and the words are then added to the word wall.
  1. Students Create Their Own Word Wall

    • Provide students with the list of words they will learn during the school year, an envelope, and a large sheet of paper. Have the students cut all the words out of the sheets provided and put in an envelope. Each week when you put new words up on the classroom word wall, have the students glue the words they learned onto their word wall. Have students take their word walls home each weekend to review with their parents.

    Bingo

    • Create a bingo game using the words being taught that week from the word wall. Expand the bingo game each month to include all words taught for the month. The game card will grow each month until it includes all the words taught during the year. As it grows, the game becomes more challenging as students must remember how to spell the word and locate it on their card.

    Relay Games

    • Write lists of word wall words on the board. Divide students into teams and line them up in front of their list. When the game starts, the first student in line must read the word on the board. If the word is said correctly, the student can erase the word and return to her seat. If not, she must go to the end of her line. The team that erases all its words first wins.

    Alphabetize

    • Provide students with index cards and have them write the week's word wall words on the cards. Next, have the students say the words and then alphabetize the words. This helps further enhance the order of the alphabet concept but also provides the students with a manipulative way to learn the word wall words.
