Meet with your child's second grade teacher to discuss his exact math difficulties. Assess if the problem is lack of understanding, inability to focus or distractions in the classroom. Create a plan with the teacher to help improve your son's math scores.
Draw charts as a reference for the concepts he is learning. For example, you might draw a place value chart with a sample number in it to help him understand the different place values. Post these charts where he can see them often.
Set up an area for your son to do his homework. Sit down with him each night to review what he did in math class that day. Ask him to explain the math concept he is working on in his own words to see if he understands.
Watch your child as he begins his homework assignment to see if he understands what he is doing. Help him work through a few problems without giving him the answers if he has difficulty.
Create sample problems and flash cards to help your child review for upcoming math tests. Refer to his second grade math book for help in creating the sample problems. Include math problems from previous chapters as a way to review and keep the information fresh.
Use blocks or other small items for your child to use for problem solving. For example, if he is working on addition, he can use the blocks to represent the two numbers being added and push them together to get the total.
Practice math skills with your child during everyday activities. For example, at the grocery store you might have him read the prices on the signs to practice money skills. Have him count objects he's playing with or estimate the amount of a certain item he has.
