Oral Report Ideas for 3rd Grade Social Studies

Social studies is a study of history, lending itself perfectly for oral reports. Students are able to present their reports by becoming storytellers. Depending on the era being studied, students are able to take on a persona of a famous person from history or as person who lived at that time. They can use props or costumes to add to their oral report.
  1. A Famous Historical Character

    • Who would be better to tell about the life of George Washington than George Washington himself? Students should research and write a short biographical report of a historical person assigned by the teacher and can present their report dressed as the actual character. The report should include important events and dates from the person's life and should explain why he is important to the world's history. The student should present the report in first person as if he is actually George Washington.

    A Colonial Settler

    • Students can present their research about life in the colonial times by telling the story of a day in the life of a person from colonial times. They could choose to be a town blacksmith, candle-maker, farmer, homemaker or a child. Through the report the child should divulge what life was like for that person, how it differed from life today and other important information that has been learned through the class and books.

How Has Freedom Played a Role in your Life?

    • America is fortunate that our forefathers fought for our freedom and formed a democracy. These men wrote the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution to protect the rights of the citizens of America. The student should write a letter thanking our forefathers for fighting for our freedom and explaining what specific examples of freedom they practice within their daily life.

    Exploring the World

    • Provide students with a list of famous explorers to research; each student should choose one explorer. The students should use the Internet, textbooks and nonfiction books to research the life of their explorer. They should write a report about the details of their explorer's life and include information about where they were from, where they traveled to, who sponsored their trip, any hardships they encountered and the results of their journey. When students present their report they should also point out on a map where they traveled to and from.
